The interesting work rarely arrives fully formed.
These are a few examples of what happens when you move anyway — the situation, the moment that made it urgent, what we did and what changed.
Boldyn Networks is one of the largest shared network infrastructure providers in the world connecting airports, transit systems and public venues across dozens of countries. They had a clear commercial offer for connectivity infrastructure for transport environments. What they did not have was a deep, evidence-based understanding of what passengers actually experience in those environments and why that should matter to the operators they are seeking to serve. The product case was solid, but the experience case could be richer.
The connectivity infrastructure market was becoming crowded and commoditised. Competing on specification alone is not a route to differentiation. The moment to move was before the category converged, while there was still space to claim a genuinely different position and not just be the company that builds the network. It is the company that understands what the network is for that matters. That required a different kind of research, published publicly and built on something more than bog standard industry reports.
We led an international, cross transport sector research programme spanning three interconnected strands of Stations of the Future, Connected Commuting and Airports of the Future. Each combined ethnographic observation in live transport environments, structured interviews with operators, designers & accessibility specialists and direct engagement with the leading thinkers shaping how transit environments are designed and experienced. The Connected Commute strand featured a podcast series with contributors including Rory Sutherland, whose work on the psychology of transport behaviour reframed the entire research direction. We synthesised the findings into published white papers, a strategic narrative and a podcast series that brought Boldyn’s thinking to a practitioner audience across the transport and connectivity industries globally.
Boldyn now has a position in the market that no competitor can replicate by improving their technical specifications. The Stations of the Future white paper is in active use in their commercial conversations with station operators. The podcast series has an audience of senior practitioners who think of Boldyn as a company that understands transport environments, not just one that services them. And the research framework continues to shape how Boldyn approaches new markets because it was built on what passengers actually experience, which does not go out of date.
